Talking About Adoption as Your Child Grows

Adoption is part of a child's story, not a single announcement that ends the discussion. A father can create a family culture where questions are welcome and where a child does not have to protect an adult's feelings to explore their own.

Keep the conversation open

AAP guidance recommends introducing adoption-related language naturally and letting explanations develop as a child's understanding grows. Start with simple, truthful parts of the story and add detail in developmentally appropriate ways.

Avoid filling gaps with guesses. If you do not know something, say so. Think carefully about what information belongs to your child and should not be shared casually with other people.

Listen without demanding gratitude

A child can love their family and still experience loss, curiosity or uncertainty. Do not interpret questions about birth family as a rejection of you.

Use respectful language and invite the child to express preferences as they grow. Their account of their identity may evolve, and your willingness to listen is more useful than a fixed script.

Find support that fits the story

Adoption experiences differ by age, race, country, contact arrangements and prior experiences. General guidance does not replace adoption-competent support or attention to an individual child's needs.

Transracial adoption, trauma and birth-family contact need more specialized discussion than this introductory guide can provide. Seek perspectives from adopted people as well as professionals.

One step this week

Make space for one question about your child's story without rushing to reassure or correct.
