Online Safety Starts With a Conversation, Not Just a Filter

Parental controls can help with some risks, but they cannot understand every conversation or guarantee a safe experience. Your child also needs an adult they can approach when something feels uncomfortable, confusing or threatening.

Start with the enjoyable parts

NSPCC guidance encourages regular discussion about online life. Ask about a favorite game, creator or group chat. Let your child explain how it works and what they like about it.

Interest is not the same as approving everything. It helps you understand the context before you discuss risks. Return to the subject in brief, ordinary conversations rather than relying on one lecture.

Agree on clear boundaries

Discuss personal information, spending, contact with people they do not know and what to do about unwanted messages. Choose settings and boundaries suited to your child's age and needs, and revisit them as circumstances change.

Explain that they can seek help even if they made a mistake or broke a rule. Do not promise that there will never be consequences, but avoid making a report of harm feel like an automatic loss of every connection they value.

Respond to a real concern

Listen calmly, take the concern seriously and use the platform's reporting tools or appropriate local services when needed. If someone is in immediate danger, seek urgent help.

Do not forward sexual images involving children or ask a child to send them to you. Seek specialist reporting guidance. Platform rules and laws change, so use current local advice rather than treating an evergreen article as a legal checklist.

One step this week

Ask your child who they would contact if an online interaction made them feel unsafe.
